I think that depression is the price we pay for refusing to give up something wonderful about ourselves that the world wants to smash. It would be really cool if we could hold on to that thing and also avoid its costs and its burdens. Maybe some days and with some arts we can.
~A wise friend
Luke, you’re going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.
Be at peace with the part of you that will never be at peace…. You do not pass through this life, it passes through you. You experience it, you interpret it, you act, and then it is different…. You will be the broken world and the act of changing it.
Going out of your mind at least once a day is tremendously important. Because by going out of your mind, you come into your senses.
Don’t just think outside the box, think outside the world of boxes.
It’s no question life’s been good to me
‘Cause life ain’t nothing but a good groove
A good mix tape to put you in the right mood
It is like a finger pointing away to the moon.
Don’t concentrate on the finger or
you will miss all that heavenly glory.
my ally is the Force
and a powerful ally it is
life creates it,
makes it grow
its energy surrounds us
and binds us
luminous beings are we, not this crude matter
you must feel the force around you
between you, me, the tree, the rock
I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me, too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.
From this place, you see things differently. Being loving is not always doing the easy thing. It means respecting people’s process, where they are, who they are. Sometimes the loving thing is to walk away. But it brings a softness to all your interactions. Your whole perspective will shift—you will have more of a long-term perspective. You will see others as they really are, you will appreciate and respect their struggles. You will not necessarily need to jump in and help, but that seeing—that very clear-eyed seeing of who and where they are—will ease their burden and further their journey.
~Penny & Friends
This thing we call failing is not the falling down, but the staying down.
~Mary Pickford via Leslie Knope on Parks & Rec
You have to go on and be crazy.
Craziness is like heaven.
Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.
~John Wayne, 1971 Playboy interview
We live as if the world were what it could be,
to show it what it can be.
~Angel the Vampire in his TV show
Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.
Every life is a pile of good things and bad things
The good things don’t always soften the bad things,
but vice versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things,
or make them unimportant.
The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
If the only prayer you ever say in your whole life is thank you, that would suffice.
Cop: It’s gonna take a lot more than you can carry in that knapsack to get you through all this.
MacGyver: Well, the bag’s not for what I take, it’s for what what i find along the way.
~First episode of MacGyver, aka. Beginning of an Era
Soul is a force that can light a room.
The force radiates from a sense
a sense of knowing where you’ve been
and what it means.
Soul is a way of life-
but it’s always the hard way.
Try not to resist the changes that come your way. Instead let life live through you. And do not worry that your life is turning upside down. How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come?
As the spirit wanes, the form appears.
My story isn’t sweet and harmonious, like invented stories. It tastes of folly and bewilderment, of madness and dreams, like the lives of all people who no longer want to lie to themselves
As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thought we wish to dominate our lives.
~Henry David Thoreau
What do you despise? By this are you truly known…. Anything outside yourself, this you can see and apply your logic to it. But it’s a human trait that when we encounter personal problems, these things most deeply personal are the most difficult to bring out for our logic to scan. We tend to flounder around, blaming everything but the actual, deep-seated thing that’s really chewing on us.
Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.
Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.
Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet.
Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.
Wherever you stand, be the soul of that place.
I like to imagine that the world is one big machine. You know, machines never have any extra parts. They have the exact number and type of parts they need. So I figure if the entire world is a big machine, I have to be here for some reason. And that means you have to be here for some reason, too.
~Brian Selznick, The Invention of Hugo Cabret
It takes a lot of energy to be a person… it takes no energy to be yourself.
Nothing is either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
Assume Positive Intent
Go out into the world with your wondrous love,
take a sip and pass it cuz you’re thinking of
some one else besides your lonely self.
That kind of sugar is top shelf.
~Jenny Greer of Jen and the Juice
Three students are leaving their last classes of the day.
The law student is thinking, ‘I’m tired and thirsty. I must have coffee.’
The engineering student is thinking, ‘I’m tired and thirsty. I must have beer.’
The nutrition student is thinking, ‘I’m tired and thirsty. I must have diabetes.’
Choose something to trust and try trusting it for a while.
The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well.
He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything.
Covering symptoms with drugs is like pulling
the batteries out
of a smoke alarm during a fire.
For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
You already have the precious mixture that will make you well.
You cannot solve problems with the same level of thinking that existed when the problems were created.
They didn’t know it was impossible so they did it.
~Mark Twain (was he talking about your cells?)
The only stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking you’ve got to have a what-the-hell attitude.
~Julia Child (cooking = life)
Exercise is King, nutrition is Queen, put them together and you’ve got a kingdom.
If man makes it, don’t eat it.
Tell me what you eat, I’ll tell you who you are.
Take full account of the excellencies which you possess, and in gratitude remember how you would hanker after them, if you had them not.
The elders have sent me to tell you
that now is like a rushing river,
and this will be experienced in many different ways.
There are those who would hold onto the shore…
there is no shore.
The shore is crumbling.
Push off into the middle of the river.
Keep your head above the water,
look around to see who else
is in the river with you,
~Choquash, a Native American storyteller.
It is not necessary that you leave the house.
Remain at your table and listen.
Do not even listen, only wait.
Do not even wait, be wholly still and alone.
The world will present itself to you
for its unmasking.
It can do no other-
in ecstasy it will writhe at your feet.
Life’s splendor forever lies in wait
about each one of us
in all its fullness.
But it’s veiled from view,
deep down, invisible, far off.
It is there, though, not hostile,
not reluctant, not deaf.
If you summon it by the right word,
by its right name, it will come.
A great deal of chaos in the world occurs because people don’t appreciate themselves.
Awareness brings its own action.
Happiness is not achieved by the conscious pursuit of happiness; it is generally the by-product of other activities.
A stonecutter can hammer away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow, it will split in two and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.
When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something’s suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful.”
Everything will be okay in the end.
If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.
It’s more important to know what type of patient has a disease than what disease a patient has.
Your true self does not lie buried deep within you, but rather rises immeasurably high above you, or at least above what you commonly take to be your I.

What follows is the culinary legacy of my Mom’s mom and Dad’s parents. It is proof that not all Italian grandparents are good cooks. It is also even more reason that I’m so lucky my Mom is an excellent cook!
