How to Register as a Medical Marijuana Patient

  1. Determine whether you are eligible. Do you have one of the 17 “serious medical conditions?”
    • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
    • Autism.
    • Cancer.
    • Crohn’s Disease.
    • Damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord with objective neurological indication of intractable spasticity.
    • Epilepsy.
    • Glaucoma.
    • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) / AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).
    • Huntington’s Disease.
    • Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
    • Intractable Seizures.
    • Multiple Sclerosis.
    • Neuropathies.
    • Parkinson’s Disease.
    • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.
    • Severe chronic or intractable pain of neuropathic origin or severe chronic or intractable pain in which conventional therapeutic intervention and opiate therapy is contraindicated or ineffective.
    • Sickle Cell Anemia.
  2. Register with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
  3. Find a doctor.
    • A Registered Physician must certify that you suffer from at least one of the 17 serious medical conditions (see list above).

How to Register as a Medical Marijuana Caregiver

If a Medical Marijuana Patient requires in-home support, is a minor or has a disability, a Registered Caregiver may obtain their medical marijuana for them.

  1. Fill out a Caregiver application
  2. Complete a criminal background check
  3. If necessary, complete an “authorization to designate a third-party caregiver” form.
  4. Ensure the patient for whom you’re acting as a Caregiver has completed their registration.
  5. Log into to pay for your Medical Marijuana card.

  6. Bring doctor’s prescription to a dispensary

  • Gov. Tom Wolf signed the medical marijuana bill in April 2016.
  • Medical marijuana is available in the following forms: pills, oils, tinctures and ointments. Marijuana plant matter is not available and smoking is forbidden.

Why not just get marijuana on the street?

  1. It’s illegal.
  2. In order to prescribe marijuana, a doctor is required to become educated on the form (indica, sattiva or a hybrid), THC and delivery method that best suits your specific medical need.
